A day in the life on ProScape's maintenance crew, and what keeps people here.
Ask Nena why someone should come work at ProScape and she doesn't start with the pay or the equipment or the trucks. She starts with the people.
"We have a great team," she says. "There's a lot of community within ProScape, and the culture is just phenomenal." She's been here almost four years, and when you ask what's kept her that long, that's the answer she keeps circling back to.
She's a bed and weed maintenance tech, which means she spends her days out on commercial properties keeping beds and hard surfaces clean. It's steady work, it's outdoors, and the way she describes it, the crew around her is a big part of why it doesn't feel like a grind.
Nena's morning begins before she's anywhere near a flower bed. Keys first, then straight to the van.
"The first thing I do when I get to work is grab my keys and go through my van check," she says. She walks the whole thing. Checks the outside, oil, tire pressure, every light.
Then she loads and checks what's inside it, the chemicals and water and whatever the day's properties call for.
"We just want to make sure our van is ready to roll."
It's a small routine, but it's the kind of thing that separates a good day from a bad one. Its also a big part of the safety focus at ProScape.
Catch a problem in the lot, and it's a two-minute fix. Miss it and you're stuck out on a site without what you need.
Once the van checks out, Nena's outside for the rest of the shift, pulling weeds off hard surfaces and out of beds and spraying. And here's where she pushes back on the idea that this is simple labor. The job rewards attention more than anything else.
"You need to know the plants you're supposed to be pulling versus the things that are meant to be there," she says. Out in a bed, a lot of things look alike. Move too fast, and you'll pull something the client planted on purpose.
Her advice to anyone thinking about applying is exactly what she had to learn herself. Know your common weeds before you touch anything. Slow down enough to actually look at what's in front of you.
Plenty of people would call a full day in the sun the hard part. Nena calls it the reason she took the job.
"Honestly, my favorite part about the job is just being outside," she says. She gardens and plants on her own time, so tending flowers on the clock feels like a fit instead of a trade-off.
